Artificial Intelligence in Operational Psychology and Behavioral Health Practice

Abstract:

The presentation aims to analyze the current state of the Romanian military operational psychology and behavioral health, in the context of the advances in artificial intelligence (AI), which could dramatically enhance the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of care.

The main concept of the Romanian military AI assisted activities in these fields consist of an integrated Al-based Telepsychology and Telebehavioral health system. This will represents the infrastructure for preventive psychoeducation, psychological assessment, clinical decision making, treatment, research, and clinical training. Additionally, virtual reality applications are being implemented across various points in the Romanian military deployment cycle to prevent, identify and treat combat-related PTSD. Moreover, advances in sensing technologies and affective computing, which have enabled machines to detect, assess, and respond to emotional states, as well as in the use of machine learning and pattern recognition, are now underway in order to improve behavioral health screening and treatment (Luxton, 2016).

Consequently, the presentation focuses on the evolution of the conceptual development underpinning the future operational and clinical applications of military psychology (Kennedy & Zillmer, 2012), within the framework of emerging capabilities, challenges, and opportunities that AI brings to the psychological practice and behavioral healthcare arenas.

In this new era, psychologists have an essential part to play in the development, evaluation, and ethical use of AI technologies. Therefore, ethical and moral aspects regarding the use of AI systems in psychological practice are discussed, in order to guide the use and development of these systems in the future.
